What is an OKR? Why They Are So Important And What They Provide

As a leader, you know how important goal setting can be. At Tandemly, we have found that OKRs (Objective and Key Results) are the best and most flexible methodology for achieving alignment across individuals and teams, prioritizing objectives, and growing the business. They work across all levels in the organization in a strategic and adaptive way to foster innovation, drive accountability, and to measure (and celebrate) success.

When a company is small, 5-10 people, it’s easy to get everyone on the same page, headed in the same direction, with everyone moving towards the same goals. As companies grow and  succeed, it becomes physically impossible for 20, 30, or more employees to always be together. This is when exciting growth can start to hurt. We’ve found the most effective (and fun!) way to get the message across without everyone always in the same room, is the use of Objectives and Key Results (OKRs).

Tandemly’s OKR Process

Tandemly first meets with senior leadership to set the 3-5 annual strategic objectives then begins a collaborative process to develop the first round of shorter-term OKRs across departments. The first round is about both setting the OKRs, and learning how to do it effectively. We are in the weeds with you, both in creation and execution. The second round of OKRs is where the “ah-ha’s” really start to happen. Teams see what worked, what didn’t and how to be more effective moving forward. Best of all is in the third and fourth OKR setting sessions when your company realizes they’ve learned a new skill that makes communicating easier and the business stronger.
